Well we have struck a resounding victory in Massachusetts. I hope you have all enjoyed today, to finally get a victory and have a chance to celebrate. I must caution that this fight is not over. Democrats have tried to get Universal Health Care, more government regulation, and more reliance on the federal government for your healthcare for over 60 years. They have never had the kind of majority that they have today, despite our big victory in Tuesday's election. Some Dems may run for the hills and back away from such a comprehensive change. They know that there is blood in the water and those that are up for election in 2010 are very aware of the political climate. But there are others, like our very own Kay Hagan, who are not up for re-election for quite some time. There will be one last push for HealthCare, and you can never forget that Susan Collins, Olympia Snow, and other RHINOS are out there. If they team up with Democrats in the Senate they can build a "starter home" for Universal Health Care that will be impossible to knock off course. I say we start peppering Hagan now with phone calls and emails. Urge them to start all over again and to include Republicans in the debate. We DO need to reform health care, but we need to make it clear that this is not the kind of reform we are looking for. That is like saying that the "stimulous bill" was the kind of bill that would spur job creation. I suggest you all call in to Hagan and keep the pressure on these people. Remember that they are representatives, and that they represent you.
Some of the ideas that need to be included are: Allowing people to purchase insurance across State Lines
Decreasing the amount of State and Federal mandates for health care (not everyone wants a free yearly physical, substance abuse services, marital counseling, psychiatric services) in their health plan. Taking away these mandates cuts the cost of premiums. Of course there needs to be tort reform protecting doctors and hospitals from law suits and liability coverage that costs all of us money when we pay for health care
Allowing individuals to get the same tax deduction that corporations do if they purchase private health care. If you have private coverage you do not have to worry about COBRA when you lose or leave your job. You can never be rated up individually once you have private health coverage, nor can you be dropped in the State of NC.
These are just a few of the ideas that will really reform Health Care, and for the better. If the Democrats are not willing to include these ideas, then we can wait until 2011 when we have more Republicans in the Houseand Senate. To contact Kay Hagan, call one or all of these phone numbers.
